Multiferroic tunnel junctions

Magnetic tunnel junctions with ferroelectric barriers, often referred to as multiferroic tunnel junctions, have been proposed recently to display new functionalities and new device concepts. One of the notable predictions is that the combination of two charge polarizing states and the parallel and antiparallel magnetic states could make it a four resistance state device. We have recently studied the ferroelectric tunneling using a scanning probe technique and multiferroic tunnel junctions using ferromagnetic La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO₃ and La_0.7Sr_0.3MnO₃ as the electrodes and ferroelectric (Ba, Sr)TiO₃ as the barrier in trilayer planner junctions. We show that very thin (Ba, Sr)TiO₃ films can sustain ferroelectricity up till room temperature. The multiferroic tunnel junctions show four resistance states as predicted and can operate at room temperatures.     

Bayesian image restoration,with two applications in spatial statistics

There has been much recent interest in Bayesian image analysis, including such topics as removal of blur and noise, detection of object boundaries, classification of textures, and reconstruction of two- or three-dimensional scenes from noisy lower-dimensional views. Perhaps the most straightforward task is that of image restoration, though it is often suggested that this is an area of relatively minor practical importance. The present paper argues the contrary, since many problems in the analysis of spatial data can be interpreted as problems of image restoration. Furthermore, the amounts of data involved allow routine use of computer intensive methods, such as the Gibbs sampler, that are not yet practicable for conventional images. Two examples are given, one in archeology, the other in epidemiology. A simple spectrophotometric determination of some chlorobenzoquinones with morpholine, thiomorpholine and piperazine

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of 2,5-dichloro-, 2,6-dichloro- and 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinones is based on the yellow products of their reaction with morpholine, thiomorpholine and piperazine in chloroform.     

Spectrophotometric determination of ascorbic acid in pharmaceutical preparations and fruit juices

Conditions were established for the determination of ascorbic acid using phsophovanadotungstic acid as reagent. The method was applied to the determination of ascorbic acid in pure form, pharmaceutical preparations and fruit juices. The method is sensitive (2-24 micrograms ml-1 of ascorbic acid) and rapid and tolerates the presence of common ingredients usually found in fruit juices. The results obtained with the proposed method showed good agreement with those given by the standard method.     

Titrimetric determination of uric acid with manganese(IV) sulfate

A simple indirect titrimetric determination of uric acid with manganese(IV) sulfate has been proposed. The method is stoichiometric and accurate and can be conveniently adapted for the assay of urinary uric acid.
